The City of Pasadena Power and Water Division is planning to remove Boiler #1 and Boiler #2 from the Broadway Steam Plant. The City plans to continue operation of Boiler #3 as a stand-alone unit for approximately 5 more years. Before the removal of Boiler #1 & #2 begins, certain electrical equipment will need to be relocated and re-energized to allow for safe demolition of Boiler #1 & #2 and continuous operation of Boiler #3. IEC is evaluating the electrical system and providing a design to reroute the 2400V power that serves Boiler #3. In addition, other balance of plant equipment common to all three boilers will be repowered for Boiler #3 to operate independently. IEC is providing detailed design engineering for the Stand-Alone Boiler #3 Electrical Modifications and the Grounding Grid Extension. Deliverables include electrical drawings, construction specifications, major equipment specifications, and an engineer’s cost estimate for the construction scope.
IEC is also providing an arc flash study of the existing electrical systems at the Broadway Steam Plant and Glenarm Power Plant. IEC is evaluating the electrical system at each plant from point of interconnection with the grid to the 480V motor control centers. A report will be provided for each plant which identifies areas that do not comply with the arc flash regulations NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace) and IEEE 1584 (Guide for Performing Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations). The report will also provide arc flash labeling requirements required by NFPA 70E.
